Welcome to the website of the
West End Community Development Consortium
The West End Community Development Consortium is a network of voluntary and community organisations in the west end of Newcastle.
We are funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to support community participation in regeneration activities.
We believe that the most effective way to do this is by helping to build the capacity of local residents and community groups to meet local needs and by supporting grassroots activity.
This website tells you about who we are, what we do, and how you can contact us.
It includes information about the work of KIP (the Knowledge Inclusion Project) which is part of WECDC. You can download copies of our Briefing Papers and Information Sheets.
There are direct links to other websites of particular relevance to the west end of Newcastle
"... we learned how to manage the project's budget and allocate resources effectively ..."
This website is at the development stage. We would like it to be a resource for local groups and organisations as well as a vehicle for us to communicate with others. We would welcome comments about what information could be made available on it.

Latest News on the General Hospital Site
Find out what is happening with Tesco and the hospital site
More delays are likely before there is a decision on the future of the General Hospital site. Tesco & its development partners submitted a planning application to the City Council for a superstore, petrol station, offices, car parks and other developments on the site several weeks ago. Many residents and local groups have attended meetings and sent letters giving their views. The formal closing date for comments was September 22nd, but comments will still be taken until the planning application goes to the Council’s Development Control Committee for councillors to make a decision. However, there will now be a further delay before the planning application actually gets to the Committee, because Tesco and its partners still have to sort out certain legal procedures to do with highways. Until this happens, the planning application in its present form is invalid.

Don’t miss the chance to comment on the plans for the General Hospital site
KIP Briefing Paper NGH Site
This is not “just another consultation”. This is the first step in the legal process that could lead to building a Tesco store, a petrol station, a multi-storey car park , and several other buildings on the hospital site.Read our briefing paper (attached) which explains what the plans are, why they matter, what questions and issues they raise for local residents and organisations, and what you can do if you have concerns about any aspects of the plans. But don’t hang about. The official closing date for comments is Monday 22nd September (although the Council will take comments up until the committee meeting that looks at the planning application)

Olders Peoples' views of local bus services in the west End of Newcastle
This is a report of the findings of a community research project looking at older residents' views of public transport in the inner west of Newcastle. It was carried out during 2007. More than a hundred older people contributed their views over the course of several months. They came from across the inner west - from Scotswood and Denton Burn to the west to Cruddas Park and Rye Hill to the east. The impetus for this research came from older people themselves. Discussions and consultation about people's experiences of living in particular neighbourhoods and about the main problems they encountered in everyday life had thrown up the issue of local bus
